One Year In—How Blackhawk Bank and Trust Is Growing Under President Christopher J. Lemon
By Ashley Horberg, Director of Marketing at Blackhawk Bank and Trust
As the holiday lights go up and another year winds down, Blackhawk Bank & Trust marks its first full year under President Chris Lemon’s leadership. Since taking on the role in October 2024, he’s helped strengthen community connections, enhance digital services, and guide the bank forward with a focus on local growth and personal service.
Over the past year, the bank expanded ITM hours to give customers access to live local tellers beyond traditional banking times, launched the Little Hawk Club youth savings program, and announced plans to rebuild the Valley Center branch in Moline — each a meaningful investment in the future of the Quad Cities.
Below, Chris reflects on his first year, what surprised him, what he’s proud of, and what’s next.
Q: What surprised you most about stepping into the role?
Chris: “Coming from the lending side, I thought I knew the bank pretty well — but once I stepped into this role, I realized just how much teamwork goes into making everything run. It’s like coaching baseball again — everyone has a position, and when they work together, great things happen. Seeing our employees grow and support each other has been one of the most rewarding parts of the job.”
Q: What excites you most about where Blackhawk Bank & Trust is headed in 2026?
Chris: “What really excites me is the momentum we have. We’re investing in new technology and facility upgrades, but the heart of it is still people — our employees, customers and communities. The Valley Center rebuild will take shape, we’ll keep expanding our ITM network and continue finding ways to make banking easier and more personal. It’s about staying true to who we are while continuing to evolve. I think our best days are still ahead.”
Q: How do you see Blackhawk Bank & Trust evolving in the next 12 months?
Chris: “It’s an exciting time for us. Part of that is helping prepare Eric Huiskamp Mutka to eventually step into the president’s role when I retire down the road. He’s a strong leader who really understands our people and what this bank means to the communities we serve. Together, we’re focused on continuing to grow by expanding our digital tools, investing in our team, and helping the next generation through programs like the Little Hawk Club. The future looks bright.”
Q: On a lighter note — when you’re not at the bank, what do you like to do?
Chris: “My wife Theresa and I love to travel and visit family, whether it’s here in the Quad Cities or across the country. When we can, we head to Door County with our dog, Chester — it’s kind of our happy place. I like to sneak in a round of golf when I get the chance too. And in the fall, I’m all about Notre Dame football. It’s a fun mix that keeps me smiling and balanced.”
Heading into 2026, Chris, the bank leadership, and staff remain focused on what truly matters: their people, their customers, and their community. That’s what keeps Blackhawk Bank & Trust moving forward.
